Risk culture — what does it mean for your institution?

The Council is opening a member-facing thread on risk culture — the collective way an institution understands, discusses, and responds to risk. We're interested in your candid view (no attribution required).

Three prompts to consider:

Tone from the top — do your Board and CEO genuinely listen to risk-function escalations, or do escalations get filtered before they reach them?
Day-to-day behaviour — do line officers feel safe pushing back on commercial pressure when risk concerns arise?
Speak-up channels — does your institution have a working whistleblower / risk-escalation channel that staff actually use?

On point #2 — speaking from a Tier-1 banking perspective, the gap between policy and practice is widest at branch level. Line officers know the policies; they don't always feel safe applying them when targets are tight.

The whistleblower channel at our institution exists on paper but is rarely used because staff don't believe it's anonymous. That perception is what needs to change first.
